Just days ahead of the NHL trade deadline, the red-hot Boston Bruins have made their first of what could be a flurry of moves by reportedly acquiring forward Charlie Coyle from the Minnesota Wild in exchange for Ryan Donato and a fifth round draft pick. TSN’s Bob Mckenzie was the first to confirm that Coyle had been traded to Boston.

Coyle, 26, has tallied 10 goals, 18 assists, and is averaging just over 17 minutes on the ice in 60 games with the Wild this season, primarily serving as a third line center.

A native of Weymouth, Ma., this will be somewhat of a homecoming for the former Boston University product before he hits free agency in 2020.

Coyle, known for his versatility, will look to provide the Bruins with some secondary scoring while the club’s leading goal-getter David Pastrnak remains sidelined with a left thumb ailment.

In Donato, a native of Scituate, Ma. himself, the Wild have picked up an excellent young forward who is still in the midst of his first full season in the NHL.

Donato, 23 and a former second round pick of Boston in 2014, has shown signs of promise, especially during the Bruins’ playoff run last year, but has struggled as of late, recording just nine points in 34 games this season.

Although the winner of this trade will not be known for quite some time, one thing is for sure, the Bruins, as they should be, are beginning to push all their chips in the middle while the Wild are going younger in a mediocre 27-27-6 season for the club thus far.

The Bruins, meanwhile, are winners of their last six contests and still have a chance to add before the February 25th trading deadline, with names like Artemi Panarin and Mark Stone reportedly on Boston’s radar.
