Remembering Stan Lee: Top 10 MCU Cameos
For comic book fans, it’s been a tough week to say the least. Legendary Marvel comics creator Stan Lee passed away Monday, November 12th, 2019, at the age of 95. He lived a long fulfilling life.
He brought to life the most iconic characters to date. One of my personal favorites being Peter Parker, aka Spider Man.
What made Stan Lee great was his creative mind and persona. If it weren’t for him, we would not have the beloved Marvel characters that we look up to and have grown to love. The success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe would have not existed with these characters Stan Lee helped to create.
They embody what it means to be a hero and inspired countless others to be heroes in their own way or continue to go on. To some, they were beacons of hope, a reason to keep going or something to look forward to.
One of the best things that each Marvel fan looked forward to while watching a Marvel Cinematic movie, was what became a classic Stan Lee cameo. It was always a clever or fun way of putting the man into the universe of these movies.
Whether it was chopping off Thor’s hair in Thor Ragnarok or being a Fedex delivery guy in Captain America: Civil War, Stan Lee brought us joy beyond his creation but with himself as a person. And with saying that, I have listed my favorite Stan Leo cameos below.
Top 10 Rankings for Stan Lee Cameos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe:
#10: Iron Man– The movie that started the Marvel Cinematic Universe. When Tony Stark is walking into the gala he pats an old man on the back saying, “looking good Hef” and the man turns out to be Stan Lee surrounded by ladies. It was only fitting that it gave us a chuckle because Tony Stark was referring to Hugh Hefner.
#9: Spider Man: Homecoming– As Peter Parker tries to be the friendly neighborhood Spider Man, he ends up causing a little chaos by accidently webbing up a nearby person. This causes the people near him to yell at him as Stan Lee says, “Don’t make me come down there, you punk!” What’s great about this was it was a very New York scene and Lee playing a grumpy old man.
#8: Avengers: Infinity War– As Peter Parker notices the strange spaceship in New York and leaves the bus, the rest of the kids on the bus notices it too as a Stan Lee bus driver says, “What’s the matter with you kids? You never seen a spaceship before?” A little underwhelming cameo considering the fact that this movie was the biggest of them all but nonetheless, still a good cameo.
#7: Black Panther- When T’Challa is at the casino in South Korea he leaves the table after winning despite not claiming it, Agent Ross notices this and Stan Lee swoops in, takes it for himself and says, “for safekeeping”. Pretty clever how they managed to get a Lee cameo despite it being predominantly in Wakanda.
#6: The Avengers– The aftermath of the battle in New York left the world shocked and asking questions. As the media goes wild, a small clip of Stan Lee playing chess with another man as he says, “Superheroes in New York? Give me a break” then continues his game. The irony is the best part.
#5: Doctor Strange– When Doctor Strange and Mordo are pitted against a bus while fighting, we see a shot of Stan Lee cracking up to reading “The Doors of Perception.” The reactions from Dr. Strange alone makes this cameo great.
#4: Captain America: The Winter Soldier– Playing a security guard at the Smithsonian, Lee realizes that Captain America’s suit is gone and says to himself, “Oh man, I am so fired.” The line is hilarious and we know as the audience that Cap himself had taken the suit.
#3: Avengers: Age of Ultron– At the Avenger’s tower, the team is celebrating a victory when Thor says he has liquor that, “no mortal can handle” just then a veteran that happens to be Stan Lee that claims otherwise. Thor pours Stan Lee a shot. The scene then cuts to Stan Lee being carried out by two men yelling, “Excelsior!”
#2: Thor: Ragnarok– As Thor is preparing to fight against the champion on Sakaar, Stan Lee is there ready to give him a haircut as he says, “Don’t you move, my hands aren’t as steady as they used to be.” Then we see thor enter the ring with a new haircut. Not bad for a guy who said his hands weren’t steady.
#1: Captain America: Civil War – Stan Lee is a FedEx delivery man who knocks on the door to delivery a package to Tony Stark but says, “Are you Tony Stank?”. This cracks up Rhodey who doesn’t let Stark live it down. Nothing beats the fact that he pronounced a billionaire’s name wrong and in the funniest way possible.
Stan Lee lives on through us, the fans of his work. I, like many other of his fans, can only hope they do something bittersweet for Avengers 4 or after his last cameo will air. His legacy will never be forgotten. I hope others can become inspired to take steps in creating something like Stan Lee did. May his soul rest easy. Excelsior!
