Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (Movie Review)

For everyone that just can’t get enough of the Harry Potter series, you’re in luck! Today, the second installment in the five-part Harry Potter spinoff series, Fantastic Beasts, was released.

If you need a refresher, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was the first movie that followed Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne), a “magizoologist,” on an adventure to capture some of the creatures that sneak out of his suitcase in the United States. After capturing all of his creatures and developing friendships with a No-Maj (muggle) named Jacob (Dan Folger), and two witches named Tina (Katherine Waterston) and Queenie (Alison Sudol), Newt must cast a spell to erase their memories, as well as everyone else’s in NYC, to protect the magical world.

The movie ends on quite an open end though, as it is revealed that infamous dark wizard Grindelwald, is back. He was hiding in plain sight the entire movie, trying to track down and control a powerful young wizard named Credence (Ezra Miller) that Newt happened to cross paths with along his journey. Although Grindelwald was taken into custody at the end of this movie, any Harry Potter fan knows that dark wizards are infamous for their escape tactics.

The second movie opens with Grindelwald breaking out of jail and attempting to track down young wizard Credence again. Grindelwald begins gathering followers in an effort to raise pure-blood wizards and witches up to rule over all non-magical beings. Grindelwald believes that with Credence’s help, they can succeed at his goal.

The movie will definitely keep fans on their toes and intrigued as to what Grindelwald is up to. Fans will especially love seeing the beginning of some of their favorite character’s bloodlines.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald stars all of the same cast as the first, with the exception of a few new faces that include Zoë Kravitz and Jude Law. Kravitz portrays Leta Lestrange, Newt’s brother’s fiancé and as the movie leads us to believe, Newt’s former friend and love interest.

Many fans will recognize the Lestrange last name as belonging to dark wizard Bellatrix Lestrange from the Harry Potter movies. Although her bloodline proves to be evil, Lestrange has decided to join the Ministry of Magic and fight for good instead.

Jude Law on the other hand, was long rumored to play the younger version of infamous wizard and Hogwarts headmaster, Albus Dumbledore. Throughout the movie, it is hinted that him and Grindelwald share a “strong” bond that began as teens. However, now it is clear that they are mortal enemies. Dumbledore in fact, is the one who enlists Newt’s help in stopping Grindelwald’s plans.

Secrets will be revealed in this movie for sure and even a few pleasantly surprising cameos are made by a few fan favorites. The movie is a must see for Harry Potter fans and for sure is shaping the storylines for the next three films in the series.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is officially out in theaters now. Be sure to check it out!
