Simple Steps to Self-Care
It’s always important to look after yourself. Whether in stressful times or good times, self-care is vital to your health and success. There are a lot of ways to check in with yourself and ensure that you’re feeling your best self at all times and some of those ways can be really fun! Here are a few of the ways I ensure I get some self-care regularly.
- Pamper Yourself
Although self-care is more than just a simple face mask or getting your hair done, it’s a good start! Treating your body to something extra special during times of stress can be relaxing and fun. Do at home pedicures and manicures are easy and fun if going to the salon isn’t an option. You can even splurge and find a nice hand or foot scrub; some DIY recipes only require a few simple ingredients like coconut oil and sugar! Face masks are always a nice relaxing option, and there’s so many of them. My favorite is Tatcha’s Violet-C Radiance Mask; although it is pricey it’s totally worth it. I noticed smoother skin after only one use! Que Bella also offers a lot of options for masks and sheets, at low prices, which can be found at Target and CVS. There are so many ways to pamper your body and trying to set one day a week focusing on that can make you feel better all around. I recently created a spreadsheet just for my skin care; ever since I started sticking to it I’ve noticed an improvement. That alone has made me feel better about myself.
- Keep Your Mind Sharp
There are lots of things to do to keep your mind busy on a regular basis and especially on days that it feels like your thoughts are running. Although I usually turn to cleaning my entire apartment when I’m stressed, there are other ways, too. Adult coloring books can provide a nice distraction and something to focus on when I need an outlet. You can get really creative with them too, and there are lots of options out there for books. Amazon has a lot of great, cheap options that can be delivered to your door and are made for stress reduction. I have a friend who loves using a Rubik’s cube when he’s stressed out. It keeps his hands busy and mind focused on solving something that is enjoyable for him. Find something that will help you focus and relieve stress. Your mind can be a very powerful thing; make it a positive, powerful thing!
- Find a Hobby and Stick to It!
One of the best hobbies I’ve found to help relieve stress and take care of myself is hitting the gym. For me, there’s nothing better than creating a great exercise playlist, tuning out the world, and focusing on my body at the gym. Your body is a temple; treat it like one! I love the app, Keep Trainer, which is free on the App Store but also offers a premium service that can be paid monthly. The app offers full workouts with videos to show how to do each exercise. They also offer a Keep Yoga app which I love. Yoga can be an amazing stress reliever; it makes you clear your mind and be in the moment. It’s a very empowering thing! I also play guitar and piano; music is an outlet for a lot of people, so even making a playlist of your favorite songs and blasting it on a tough day can be great. When you’re in the midst of stressing out, do yourself a favor: take a moment, blast your favorite music and dance. It’s actually a great stress reliever; it’s a go-to for my roommate and I on rough days! Some people love to cook, and it’s always important to eat even when we’re stressed. Finding some creative and fun recipes makes the process a lot better. There’s a million hobbies and activities that can be done based on what you love to do. Find one and stick to it!
- Mantra, Mantra, Mantra.
I thought this one was crazy at first. Someone close to me once told me that when she can’t sleep at night, she repeats the same sentence to herself over and over to calm her thoughts and help ease her mind. This can be something different for a lot of people, but mine is and always will be: peace, love and positivity. Even on bad days, I remind myself of these 3 important virtues and make them the core of my life, everyday. I’ve noticed that ever since I started doing this, I’ve become a more patient person to those around me. I started focusing on actually listening to people when they talk instead of just wanting to talk about myself. Trying to find a mantra that helps you stay positive in the stressful times can be a great thing for your mind.
With the stress of everyday life, especially as a college student, it can be tough to find a moment to breathe. But, it is so important! Take care of yourself, check in with your friends and stay positive. Treat yourself like the great person you are and always take a second to breathe it out when things get stressful. Even life seems to be at war with you, there’s always a solution and a great start is ensuring that you take care of yourself. Your body and mind will thank you.
