Life of the Party is the perfect Mother’s Day movie
Most teens dream of the day when they go to college, to start their independent lives and move away from their parents, while beginning to work towards their careers. In the movie, Life of the Party, Maddie Miles, (Molly Gordon) goes to the college where her parents went many years before her. Deanna Miles, (Melissa McCarthy) and Dan Miles, (Matt Walsh) drop Maddie off at college. After unexpected divorce, Deanna, now in a state of shock and sadness decides to go back to college where she hadn’t finished her degree. Of course, her college is where her daughter Maddie now attends school.
At first the uneasy moods between both mother and daughter can be felt, but as the movie progresses, they grow together. Although the movie presents some of the harsh realities of life, such as: unemployment, drama, and stress, it also shows the positive in bonding with your child.
This role for Melissa McCarthy is her best yet. It shows her imperfections, but also highlights her confidence in herself to go out and achieve a lifelong dream of hers. In an interview McCarthy did with USA Today, she explained she loved the film because “ It showed a mom-and-daughter relationship where they weren’t at each other’s throats. You just don’t see that that much.”
Because of this nuanced mother-daughter relationship, Life of the Party is a perfect movie to see over Mother’s Day Weekend. Life of the Party is in theaters now.
