Fortnite: The Newest Video Game Sensation
If you’ve checked Snapchat recently, you’ll probably see one of your friends stories with a “#1 Victory Royale” stamped on their television. But what does this mean? A recent video game has been released free to the public called Fortnite, a battle royale survival game, where you go head-to-head with up to 100 players in an attempt to be the last man standing, aka “#1 Victory Royale.”
It seems like a pretty simple premise, but its popularity has swept the globe with over 43 million active players. Fortnite’s sudden explosion into the mainstream culture, however, has created an addictive fanbase far beyond the imagination of its creator, Epic Games.
The high acclaim has flooded social media with gameplay, Victory Royale posts, and of course, memes.
Classrooms at Suffolk, as well as many schools across the country, have the sole discussion topic about strategies one takes in order to get 1st place; and those who have no interest in the game aren’t taking it anymore.
In fact, a petition on Twitter has gone viral by girlfriends who feel the game has taken away the attention of their boyfriends. So far, the tweet has gotten almost 10,000 retweets. But it isn’t enough to get rid of Fortnite entirely.
So for now, it looks like the game is here to stay. Get Fortnite for free now if you own an Xbox, PS4, or PC.
