In Real Life Talks About Life After Winning ABC’s “Boy Band”
Everyone, or most people, know One Direction, a boy band that went onto make history all from just being formed on a little talent show called X Factor. A few years later, ABC started a show called Boy Band where viewers vote for their favorite contestants and five winners will form a new band. The first season winners were Brady Tutton, Chance Perez, Drew Ramos, Sergio Calderon and Michael Conor. Together, they form In Real Life. Currently, they have a song called “Tattoo” out on iTunes. In Real Life will sure make an impact in this new era of boy bands. The Suffolk Voice writer, Will Heffernan, had the chance to interview the band about their music and reaction to being the first winner of the show Boy Band.
Q: What was the experience for everyone on Boy Band like?
A: Brady: Boy Band was a great experience for a lot of reasons. Of course, it was a lot of fun, but it also gave us a chance to bond and get better at what we do before being a band. I think it really helped our performance skills as a whole.
Q: What made you guys want to get into music?
A: Michael: I saw a JAY-Z music video when I was like 10. I was immediately hooked and later found artists like Eminem, Nas and Kanye West.
Chance: I’ve been singing since I was four years old. My parents always played music through the household so I was always singing along.
Q: How do you guys stand out in this new era of boy bands?
A: Chance: We have a classically trained singer, a rapper, and a Spanish speaker; we get to incorporate all those different things into our music. Also, we are all just normal, relatable people. Less than a year ago we were living completely normal lives.
Drew: I think each of us has something different to offer. Our fans got to watch us get put together on national television which is something that hasn’t really been done before.
Q: What’s it like to be a part of a new era of boy bands? And have there been any crazy fan experiences yet?
A: Sergio: It’s a great feeling to be in this new era of boy bands. Boy bands have been so iconic in pop culture and we’re all hoping that we can be a part of that ourselves.
Brady: I was once given a hippo as a present. This girl symbolically adopted a hippo and gave it to me and let me name it. Definitely one of the more unique gifts I’ve received, and much appreciated because now I have a hippo… kind of.
Q: Were there any challenges or nerves before you guys went to audition for the show knowing that there would be a possibility of becoming a boy band with people you didn’t know at first?
A: Chance: We all just had to learn about each other. There was never any leaving anyone out because we knew that anyone could end up being in the final band. It brought all of us closer because of that.
Q: You guys recently performed on Jimmy Kimmel what was that experience like?
A: Michael: Performing on Jimmy Kimmel was always a huge dream for me. It was such a surreal experience to be able to perform there after seeing so many of my favorite artists grace the same stage.
Brady: That was one of the craziest moments of my life. I’ve grown up watching that show, so to think that we’d ever be standing on that stage was an absolute dream.
Q: What is “Tattoo” about?
A: Sergio: “Tattoo” is about wanting to make your relationship with somebody work out. The tattoo is a metaphor meaning that the relationship will always have a lasting impression on you so you want to make the best out of it.
Drew: Exactly. Relationships can have a permanent effect on you, just like a tattoo is permanent on your skin.
Q: Is there a full album on the way soon and when can we expect it? And do you guys plan to tour this year?
A: Michael: We’re definitely hoping to go on tour! As far as an album, we’re constantly recording new music. Once we have a body of work that we think is good enough to put out to the world, we will definitely do so.
Q: In honor of “Tattoo,” does anyone have a meaningful tattoo or if anyone of you were to get a tattoo what would it be and why?
A: Chance: I have a tattoo on my chest of my daughter’s birthday! July 10th, 2015
Brady: Chance and Sergio already have tattoos, but I want one soon. I think I might get a four-leaf clover on my wrist
Q: Finally, since the band’s name is In Real Life, has this whole experience felt like real life for any of you yet?
A: Sergio: The craziest part for me throughout this whole experience is going to new places and actually having people show up to radio stations, shows, and meet and greets.
Chance: It’s crazy that this is in fact our real, daily lives now. Everything felt like a dream at first, and it still does at times. But honestly, I’m so happy that this is my life – this is what I always dreamed of.
