Why You Should Watch Riverdale (If you don’t already)

I should start by speaking to those who have not already watched is one of the best teen drama shows since Gossip Girl, One Tree Hill, AND Teen Wolf. If that’s already not enough to watch this show, let me give you a few more reasons…

The season one finale left us on all the edge of our seats (SO. MUCH. HAPPENED) and being that season two start’s on Wednesday, October 11th, you have one week to binge watch the first thirteen episodes on Netflix or The CW app. Start bingeing now because the Executive Producer, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa promises, “a season for the books.”

The show is loosely based on the Archie Comic Book series. “Loosely” meaning the characters names and appearances are similar to the characters from the comics. The main plot of the show starts with a murder, one of the first major murders the town of Riverdale has ever had. The over-arching question throughout the first season is, “who is the murderer?” The show includes amazing sub-plots and twists that connect so well in the show it never gets boring!

Betty Cooper, played by Lili Reinhart is mainly described as “the perfect girl next door.” Throughout season one she runs a separate and much more intense investigation on the murder.

Along with help from Jughead Jones, played by Cole Sprouse, the two pair up as writer’s for their school’s newspaper, and use it to publish their opinions on the Police’s investigation vs. theirs. Calling all communication and journalism majors here at Suffolk; a reason to watch Riverdale because they’re always investigating and reporting!

Want another reason to watch Riverdale? The actors on this show are genuinely talented. There’s no character on this show that makes you internally cringe at every time they act in a scene (*cough* Jenny Humphry from Gossip Girl *cough*). Fun fact! KJ Apa who plays Archie Andrews is actually from New Zealand. He has beautiful accent, but when he is becomes Andrews, his American accent is just as dreamy. If you already can’t tell from the official show poster…yes…it’s true…Cole Sprouse from The Suite Life of Zack and Cody is BACK. Graduated from NYU, he portrays his role of Jones almost identical to the comics. Jones is the rebellious “weirdo” of the town of Riverdale. He comes from a broken family, where his mother has left and his father is part of a gang from the “Southside of the train tracks.” The beanie and dyed black hair fits him so well. If that is STILL not enough to make you watch the show, you should know the number of cameos in Riverdale is unbelievable! Luke Perry from Beverly Hills 90210 plays the main character’s father, Fred Andrews. The 80’s is back with Molly Ringwald as Andrews’ mom.

The way Riverdale is filmed is also another great reason to watch. The show’s cinematography is very 1980’s dark, grungy noir. The show uses the original hangout spots from the comics including Pop’s Diner where they munch on milkshakes and burgers while trying to solves the town’s biggest murder mystery. The retro diners and dark crisp filming style set it above the rest of the teen shows we’re used to. The way the show is filmed makes everything seem more intense and higher quality.

The final (and my personal favorite) reason you should watch Riverdale is the cast’s bond. The series regulars are: KJ Apa, Lili Reinhart, Camilla Mendes, Cole Sprouse and Madelaine Petsch, This group’s humor is on the next level! Whatever interview they all have together is always humorous and unforgettable. The collective age of the cast is between 19-24 so their tweets are very relatable to college students, and their meme game is pretty high.

Happy watching!

Riverdale airs on Wednesdays at 8/7c on the CW.
