2017 Forbes Under 30 Summit
Last year Forbes held its annual Forbes Under 30 Summit for the first time in Boston. It was such a big success that Forbes decided to have the Under 30 Summit in Boston for a second year in a row. This year more than 7,000 attendees were a part of a four-day fun-filled, eventful, summit.
The summit kicked off with a music festival that took place at City Hall Plaza on Sunday, October 1st. The performers were Skylar Grey, Playboi Carti, and Zedd. Skylar Grey opened the music festival by performing her songs “Wear Me Out,” and “Glorious,” which she and Macklemore do together. Grey also performed some songs that you might not have realized she wrote such as, “Love The Way You Lie”, which Eminem and Rihanna sing, as well as “Clarity,” which Zedd decided to pick up and turn it into a smash hit. Following Grey was Playboi Carti. For those who don’t know Carti, he is known for his popular hip hop/rap songs like “Magnolia,” and “Wokeuplikethis*.”
Closing out the insanely talent filled music festival was Zedd. Not only does he have great music to play but his visual sets are memorable and appealing. Zedd got the crowd dancing by playing songs like “Break Free,” “Get Low,” “Stay,” “Clarity,” and “Beautiful Now.” Unlike other DJs, Zedd plays songs that he wants to and he doesn’t switch the sets for every crowd. This makes him more of a musician, as he explained in an interview with Forbes moderator Zack O’Malley.
The second day was full of events. In the Boston Seaport on Monday, Lindsey Vonn hosted a work out for an hour. It was a hardcore workout that woke up everyone who participated.
Later that day Tyler Oakley spoke. Oakley is a You Tuber who just celebrated his 10th year anniversary of joining YouTube. Oakley stated in an interview at the summit how he was honored to be a part of the community of YouTube and to be able to witness people do good and help others.
Later that day, Lindsey Vonn spoke. Vonn, one of the best skiers of all time, spoke with the Editor of Forbes, Randall Lane about how she is trying to race a man to show that women are equally as powerful and talented as men. Just like Billy Jean King’s tennis match against Bobby Riggs , as can be seen in the movie, Battle of the Sexes, Lindsey Vonn could, in fact, be racing against a man, making history in the skiing world.
Ending the major interviews of Monday was YouTube and viral internet sensation, Jake Paul. Paul is known for causing controversy and drama, but is however quite smart. Paul may strike you as a typical “college frat bro,” but he runs a business called “Team 10,” where they sign people who have a talent, but who don’t have a following. Being signed to Team 10 helps get that person exposure and build up a following. They also get their own merchandise to sell as well. Paul explained how the Kardashians collectively were not gaining as many followers as Team 10 collectively were. Team 10 is gaining 10 million followers a month while the Kardashians are gaining 5 million.
The final day of the summit on Tuesday, October 3rd, had Kendrick Lamar speak about his life. Lamar is a seven time Grammy award winning rapper who has inspired millions. Lamar fell in love with hip-hop at age four and then again with freestyle at the age of eight . He has since been recognized by many successful musicians like Ice Cube and Kurupt. Even former President of the United States, Barack Obama, invited Lamar to the White House.
Overall, the Forbes Under 30 Summit was another success in Boston, from stimulating workouts with Olympians to listening to one of the greatest rappers of all time speak and give advice . There was a lot of diversity at this year’s Forbes Under 30 Summit. For more information about the Under 30 Summit event check out the link, https://www.forbes.com/forbes-live/event/under-30-boston/.
