Concert Review: Halsey at Mohegan Sun
Ashley Nicolette Frangipane, more commonly known for her stage name, Halsey, is a relatively new artist who, in the past year, has become more well-known after her Grammy-nominated track with The Chainsmokers titled, “Closer” became one of the most popular songs of 2016.
Halsey embarked on her second world tour, the Hopeless Fountain Kingdom tour this past Friday, at the Mohegan Sun arena in Uncasville, CT. I was already excited to see Halsey, because I saw her previously on her first tour, the Badlands tour. Even though I only knew two songs then, I had a great time. She was an amazing singer live and put on a great show.
Halsey stated in an Instagram post prior to the first day of the tour that her stage, graphics, and pyrotechnics are all inspired by Kanye West. The first thing you heard at the beginning of the concert was Kanye chanting, “Hopeless”, the name of her second album and tour. Her second album was a more hip-hop/pop feel compared to the first album which was more pop/alternative. Her two openers were Charli XCX and rapper, PARTYNEXTDOOR, she described them both at the concert as, “two people that are way cooler than me, I’m happy you guys stayed after their awesome sets.”
The stage, graphics, pyrotechnics, and atmosphere throughout the concert had so much energy. You did not need to know any of her songs to have a great time. Her voice is one of those rare voices that sounds better live than on the recorded tracks. All of her songs touched on several topics like the LGTBQ community, abusive relationships/breakups, mental health disorders, and drug use. Her outfits were all different and creatively matched the graphics and lights of each performance.
It also happened to be her 23rd birthday that day so her loved ones surprised her with a montage of “Happy Birthday” videos from close friends, family, and celebrity friends, and was then surprised on stage by her famous boyfriend, hip-hop singer, G-Eazy.
I 100% recommend that everyone see this talented artist. It is a concert that finds a way to connect with so many different people.
