2017 Arthur Ashe Kids Day
22 years ago the first Arthur Ashe Kids Day took place. On August 26th 2017 the 22nd Annual Arthur Ashe Kids Day took place at the famous USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, Queens New York. For the past 22 years this event has been inspiring the younger generation to play tennis and stay active by inviting families to come watch and participate in this day long event. The event also includes musical performances by up and coming musicians.
This years Arthur Ashe Kids Day included musical guests such as Sofia Carson; known for her role in the Disney Channel Original Movie, Descendants, Carson was also one of the hosts for the event. The event also included Jack & Jack, comprising of Jack Johnson, a rapper who brings his own unique style to each song and Jack Gilinsky who can sing and break hearts worldwide. In an interview I had with them before the show they told me what it’s like to be apart of such an event. Gilinsky told me, “It’s honestly such an honor to be here. I mean you look around and you see so many seats and knowing that every seat will be filled by someone who’s interested in watching, it’s such an honor to be performing on this court.” Johnson then went on to say “totally man, it’s such a prestigious event, seeing so many artists in the past come through here is kind of like a right of passage in a way for up and coming artists, so we are just really really honored.” Jack & Jack also informed me about their upcoming tour, Johnson said “Yes, totally. October, November keep an eye out.” Gilinsky went onto to inform me by saying “October, November and early December, we are so excited, it’s going to be our first full length tour since last year so with the new music it’s going to be so much fun.” The pop duo also said they think they could take on the Williams sisters in a match, Johnson said he thinks “they would just destroy us,” but Gilinsky thought otherwise and said “we would just destroy them.” Alex Aiono, who is a talented twenty one year old who plays multiple instruments and got his start on You Tube by covering popular songs and putting his own unique style on each song. Aiono has been on tour with Sabrina Carpenter on her De-Tour, along side with Carson, Aiono was also one of the hosts and musical performers. Aiono told me in an interview what it’s been like touring with Sabrina and New Hope Club. “Man I can not say nicer things about Sabrina, she is the sweetest human, she is so kind. Backstage it’s all jokes, we’re all laughing, she just played a prank on New Hope Club, she stuffed their van with peanuts because it was their last show. It’s just all fun and jokes and laughter and when we get on stage we just try to put on the best show we can.” Aiono also told me what it’s like to be apart of such an event like Arthur Ashe Kids Day, “It’s surreal, five years ago I was here playing on the festival stage with the dream that one day I’ll be up here on the big stage. It’s so nice to be up here hosting and performing. There have been such amazing performers that have been here in the past, Justin Bieber, Rihanna, Jonas Brothers, so walking and following those foot steps is great.” Aiono also informed me what to expect from his upcoming single, “I am so excited, “Does it Feel Like Falling” is coming out September 15th. We had a great team around it, I am just excited, it’s more of the music that the fans will enjoy.” Why Don’t We was also a musical guest, Why Don’t We is currently dominating every aspect of the musical industry. Their current hit song “Something Different,” was on L.A.’s KIIS FM, their latest EP titled “Why Don’t We Just” hit number one on iTunes Pop chart and their recent headlining tour sold out in every city, so you could say that they are going to be around for a while. I had the chance to ask them what it’s like to perform at Arthur Ashe Kid’s Day, “O my gosh, it’s such a blessing, I mean this is our biggest show by far for a stadium show and to do a fundraiser like this and seeing the line up before hand and stuff, we are just so blessed. It feels super surreal for sure.” The band also told me the story of how they met Logan Paul and how that friendship has grown into making viral hits. “We were at our last show on tour back in February, and we go up to the front of the stage where we take pictures with our fans and stuff, it’s like our little moment in the show, and usually they freak out and they’re hugging you but they were just pointing past us and we were like what is happening. So Logan Paul is crawling on stage with a vlog camera during our set it was so funny. That’s how we met the guy.” Other acts included the British pop band, New Hope Club, Saving Forever, and Elvis Duran’s artist of the month for July 2017, Spencer Sutherland. Sutherland told me in an interview what it means to him to be performing at Arthur Ashe Kids Day. “This is the coolest thing in the world, I’ve been coming to this show for the past five years so to finally get here and do this is so cool.” Sutherland also told me that he will be coming back to Boston to make up that day he couldn’t come, “I definitely will, I am looking at a bunch of tour dates in the Fall and Winter for the US, I’m so excited for that.”
This year also included tennis legends Venus Williams, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal who participated in playing tennis with some lucky upcoming young tennis pros. Make sure to watch the event for yourself on August 27th at 2PM ET on ABC.
