Winter Wonderland Takes Over Boston City Hall Plaza
For the first time in Boston history there’s a dashing winter festival for all, filled with fun activities and portable Christmas shops, located right in the heart of the city at Boston City Hall Plaza. After a delayed grand opening, the official start of the so-called “Boston Winter” event was yesterday.
Berkshire Bank is sponsoring the event, which includes an 11,000 square foot outdoor ice-skating rink, courtesy of Rink Management Services. You can get 50 percent off the cost of admission for the skating rink if you use a Berkshire Bank debit or credit card. The rink will also host 30-minute skating lessons offered to the public for $99/lesson. The lessons will be held on a weekly basis, starting January 7th.
The festival also offers free access to a multitude of activities: food vendors, a European-style Christmas market, live DJ music, games on ice, and prizes.
Students in the city seem to love the City Hall Plaza’s new transformation, but have their own ideas about how it could be better. Myriam Oba, a freshman here at Suffolk said, “They should add more lighting at the entrance and make it more noticeable, but other than that it’s amazing how they created a whole new Christmassy world. The atmosphere in itself is very welcoming and cozy and most of all the ice skating court is just impressive and beautiful.”
Daniel Stump, a freshman at Suffolk also shared his excitement, saying “the city is putting everyone in the Christmas spirit,” and that his favorite part is, “the pure joy of passer-byers’ [sic] faces when they see the lights.”
Boston Winter will be open every day of the week until the end of February.
