Fall Trends 2016

Let the fall festivities begin! If you couldn’t tell from the pumpkin spice advertisements at every coffee shop, fall is here, and I am loving every minute of it!

We all have our fashion staples that we eagerly await to wear when fall comes around. I asked students around the Suffolk campus what their go-to pieces of fall fashion are and what trends they’re loving this season.

Flannel is a staple that makes its grand return every year. It’s that one article of clothing that never goes out of style. When it comes to flannel appreciation (or lack thereof), there’s two ends of the spectrum. You’re either like me where you wear your flannels periodically (flannel Fridays anyone?), or flannel is just an everyday occurrence for you, like my roommate. I’m pretty sure if she could wear head-to-toe flannel she would and probably already has.

If you’ve kept up with New York Fall Fashion, you must have noticed that the two hottest trends this season are velvet and stitching in shirts and sweaters. That’s right, fall 2016 is basically a flashback to your favorite Friends episode, the 90’s are back, baby!

Quite some time has passed since I’ve owned, let alone dressed in velvet. But I must admit after scrolling through Pinterest and skimming through Glamour, it’s probably safe to say I’m hopping on the velvet bandwagon. There are so many ways to go with velvet- from pants to dresses to shirts, scarves, and even bags!

Every year fall comes around, we can’t help but take part in all the necessary activities, such as pumpkin picking, apple picking, and anything else you can pick for an Instagram picture. I won’t even deny the fact that I am the most basic girl when it comes to fall. I do everything from pumpkin picking to baking fall treats to watching Hocus Pocus over and over again.

My best piece of advice is stop trying to act like you’re better than fall and just embrace everything that it brings with it. I always like to kick off the season with picking apples and pumpkins. It’s fun to get dressed up in the hottest fall fashion trends and make your friends take semi- candid pictures of you picking that perfect pumpkin. Personally, I love taking advantage of the fall foliage and heading out into nature. Hiking is one of my favorite things to do, and with the leaves changing and the cool breezy sweater weather, it makes it the most breathtaking time to get out there.

If you’re anything like me and look for any excuse to eat, and since pumpkin is my holy grail of flavors, you know I’ll be baking for as long as it’s socially acceptable to consume anything pumpkin. I usually find myself scrolling on Pinterest for hours pinning fall recipes that usually don’t end up being made. However, I do have a few go-to treats that I make on the regular. Pumpkin cookies and bread are for sure to make the cut, along with apple crisp and apple cider donuts. Unfortunately, my rendition of cider donuts will never come close to competing of those at the Boston Public Market.

Of course, what’s food without a beverage?! The best part about fall themed drinks is that you don’t have to even be a coffee drinker to enjoy them! I personally run on coffee and am slowly starting to just inject it right into my veins rather than drink it. So besides the well known pumpkin spice latte, there are various drinks such as white chocolate pumpkin hot chocolate, hot or even iced maple cinnamon lattes, and of course the favorite hot or iced apple cider.

As sad as you may be that the endless days of summer are behind us, hopefully you become inspired by the fashion trends, food, and activities that fall brings with it. If anything, it’s an excuse to eat an absurd amount of cider donuts, and who can argue with that?
