Boston Pops 4th of July Spectacular
Once a year Boston hosts one of America’s largest celebrations on The Esplanade at the Hatch Shell, where a half million people come to watch. This year was a special one because pop star icons Demi Lovato, Nick Jonas and country superstars, Little Big Town performed. Also Entertainment Tonight co-host, Nancy O’Dell was a part of the show. This year was David Mugar’s last year as executive producer, which means it might be the last 4th of July Spectacular. However, instead of looking to the negative, there were many more positives that were in last nights “spectacular” show.
The Boston Pops 4th of July Spectacular is always a good way to celebrate the 4th. This year was even more packed than previous years, due to the talent that was performing. Demi Lovato took the stage to perform her hits “Cool For the Summer,” “Confident,” “Stone Cold,” and she performed a tribute to the late Prince by singing “Purple Rain.” She also performed with Nick Jonas singing “America The Beautiful,” and Nick Jonas’s hit song “Close.” I had the opportunity to ask Demi Lovato what it was like to be performing with the Boston Pops. “It feels amazing, like I said, it’s an honor and I’m super excited.”
Country superstars Little Big Town also took the stage to perform their songs. Personally I thought they sounded the best with the Boston Pops, as it sounded natural for their music to be accompanied by a symphony orchestra. They performed their current smash hit “Girl Crush,” their new song which Pharrell Williams produced, called “Miracle,” their hit “Boondocks,” as well as “Pontoon.”
Nick Jonas also performed with the Boston Pops and made the teenage girls scream at the top of their lungs. Jonas performed his hits, “Jealous,” “Chains,” “Close,” (with Demi Lovato) and also performed “Desperado” as a tribute to the Eagles singer Glenn Frey who passed away earlier this year.
Nancy O’Dell, who I thought had the most challenging job of them all, hosted it all. The Entertainment Tonight co-host was a perfect person to host the magical night since she hosts one of CBS’s top shows. I had the chance to meet her backstage and I told her what a great job she was doing, because I knew how difficult her job was. She told me “thank you; everyone doesn’t know what goes on backstage, but I have to be from one place to another place in 30 seconds or less.”
Even though there were so many huge iconic performers we have to give credit to the legend Keith Lockhart. Without Keith Lockhart there would be no Boston Pops. Keith Lockhart has performed with many accomplished performers including Kelly Clarkson and Toby Keith, so he is no stranger performing with the younger generation of pop country performers. I had the opportunity to ask what it felt like to perform with the younger generation before the show. Lockhart said “It makes me feel old, there is that, no, I mean these are superstars that have done very well and succeeded in a very, very competitive field and that is the same whether they are 23 or 43 years old. It’s more of a matter where in situations like this, I always have to remember that just because of their age, talent and experience; they haven’t done these types of shows as often. This is a very unusual event. Most of the events that pop stars perform in are tightly scripted whereas the general nature of this 4th of July event makes it a little bit more improvisatory.”
The show culminated with the grand and outstanding fireworks display, which we know everyone loves to see! I always remembered watching them on TV and to finally see them in person was “spectacular”! They were certainly bigger in person. Overall the night was full of many great performances! If you have never been to the Boston Pops 4th of July Spectacular, I highly recommend adding it to your bucket list of great things to do and see!!
