Rams Recap: Winkler named GNAC men’s tennis player of the year

Senior Marc Winkler was named the GNAC men’s tennis player of the year this week. Winkler finished the season 9-0 and closed his career with a record of 23-8 in singles play and 25-7 in doubles. The native of Caracas, Venezuela was also named the 2012 GNAC rookie of the year.

Winkler and his partner, junior Calixto Romero, also went 9-0 in doubles this season and were named to the All-Conference second team. Romero was named to the first team for his singles play, in which he finished 8-1, and to the All-Sportmanship team.

Freshman Alonso Vela (5-3) grabbed third-team honors for singles play.

Suffolk finished the season at 6-3 and was eliminated by Norwich University, 5-4, in the GNAC semifinals.

The Suffolk University softball team had four of its players named to GNAC all-conference honors this week.

Freshman catcher Delaney Sylvester (.431 batting average, 37 RBIs), sophomore infielder Kristen Young (.434, league-high 36 stolen bases in 36 attempts), and freshman outfielder Devlin Frost (.355, three home runs) were named to the first team. Senior infielder Nicole Rosa (.358, 21 RBIs) was a third-team selection.

Senior pitcher Sarah Chasse (9-5, nine complete games) made the GNAC Sportsmanship Team.

The Rams are 24-14 and declared for the ECAC Division III New England Championship.
