Neon: The Newest Sports Trend
When you go to any sporting event there is bound to be players clad in neon colors.
This was seen most recently in the Super Bowl, where fluorescent green popped off of the Seattle Seahawks’s deep navy blue Nike uniforms. The New England Patriots, on the other hand, wore non-fluorescent colors of red, white and blue.
The neon trend is sparking in popularity among the younger generations. This makes younger athletes a great target demographic for sporting companies who are seeking a push in sales.
“Uniform designers have come to the realization that kids prefer fluorescent colors,” said DayGlo Business Manager Brian Skelly. “We’ve definitely seen a spike in sales in the last couple years.”
When neon colors did not dominate the sporting world and were not a part of the team uniform, neon provided an element of individualism in an athlete’s clothing. The simple act of wearing neon socks or gloves set you apart from everyone else, making it a little easier, especially in school sports, for a parent to spot their own children.
A study done by DayGlo, a manufacturer of fluorescent pigments, found that the children prefer neon colors 4-1 over the conventional colors. Additionally, the company determined that customers will stop to look at a product with neon colors for a longer period of time than if the product did not have neon.
Bright colors were big in the 1980s, but the technology has vastly improved, making the colors stay bright even after washing them and making the pigment more durable, so it doesn’t rub off on your skin. These improvements have made neon colors more prevalent.
“It’s definitely having an impact on what people are buying,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. “It’s a huge attention-getter; the human eye cannot avoid looking at a color with that much intensity and sparkle.”
Neon is expected to stay around for a long time due to the great influence of Nike, Adidas and Under Armour in the design of professional sports wear in a buyer’s market. This neon trend is being kept alive with striking products, improved with innovating technology, attracting the youthful eye.
