Wentworth Snaps Suffolk Hockey’s Undefeated Streak
BOSTON – The Suffolk hockey team lost to the Wentworth Leopards in a non-conference game, 2-1, Sunday night at Boston University’s Walter Brown Arena. The loss, which is the first of the season for the 7-1-1 Rams, came in their second game in two nights.
After Brandon Smolarek stopped 31 of 34 shots in Suffolk’s 4-3 win over Franklin Pierce on Saturday, he got the start against Wentworth.
He turned aside 35 of 37 shots to keep his team in the game.
The Rams got off to a strong start, and after a solid penalty kill in the second, Stanton Turner put them on the board.
The Rams, who were 0 for 1 on the power play, could not catch a break. Wentworth went 1 for 5 on the man advantage, and it wasn’t until the third that they finally converted.
Just two minutes after Jake McDonough tied the game at 1, the Leopards took the lead when their leading scorer, Kevin Crowe, one-timed a shot past Smolarek for a 2-1 advantage.
The Rams, who only had five shots on net in the final period, could not find an answer to the outburst.
Much like the rest of Suffolk, the Rams now head off on winter break. The Rams currently stand atop the ECAC Northeast with a 4-0-1 conference record. Just behind them is Nichols (3-1-1).
The Rams pick things back up on January 2. They’ll play in the Salem State Tournament, against Salem State.
Since we’re at break, let’s look at who’s leading the Rams.
