Rams Recap: Hockey Unbeaten at Home

In this edition of the Rams Recap, the hockey team is unbeaten in their last three, and women’s basketball wins their home opener. Maggie Masse looks back at the week that was in Suffolk sports. Go Rams!

Hockey

The Rams routed Nichols on Wednesday, 7-1 (Lenny Rowe)

The hockey team extended their unbeaten streak to three games as they skated to a 3-3 tie with the Becker College Hawks in ECAC Northeast action on Saturday evening.

Sophomore Carmen Mastrangelo (Wellington, FL) netted a pair of goals and senior Charlie McGinnis (Hanover, MA) knocked home his third goal of the season as the Rams earned a point on the road, picking up their fifth point in conference play thus far. Sophomore Brandon Smolarek (Chesterfield, MI) recorded 25 saves over 65 minutes of action.

Earlier in the week, freshman Simon Leahy (Milwaukee, WI) tallied a pair of goals and an assist to lead the Rams to a 7-1 ECAC Northeast victory over the Nichols College Bison. Suffolk used a four-goal outburst in the opening period, including a pair off the stick of sophomore Tyler Murray (Houston, TX), to take control of the contest.

The team is 3-0-0 on home ice.

Record: 1-0-1 for the week, 3-2-1 on the season

Standings: 5th in ECAC Northeast (2-2-1)

Women’s Basketball

The women’s basketball team won their 2013-14 regular season home opener with a 63-45 non-conference victory over the Colby-Sawyer College Chargers on Saturday afternoon.

Senior Jennifer Ruys (Wallingford, CT) led the Rams with a team-high 13 points, while freshman Georgia Bourikas (Hull, MA) was a perfect 4-for-4 from the arch for 12 points. Sophomore Katie Murray (Holden, MA) finished with a game-high 11 rebounds, as Suffolk held a slight edge on the glass at a 40-31 margin.

Earlier in the week, the Rams fell to the Framingham State University Rams, 62-61, in nonconference action. Ruys led all scorers with 23 points, including 8 in the final 1:50 of regulation, while junior Shelby Santini netted 16 points and collected 7 steals in the loss.

Record: 1-1 for the week; 3-1 on the season

Next Game: host Roger Williams University on Tuesday, November 26th at 5:30pm

Men’s Basketball

The men’s basketball team suffered a 73-84 setback in their 2013-14 home opener against the Daniel Webster College Eagles on Saturday afternoon.

Junior Sam Nwadike (Houston, TX) led the Rams with 21 points, while sophomore Caleb Unni (Winchester, MA) recorded 17 points and finished with a team-high 9 rebounds as Suffolk dropped their third straight contest.

Suffolk fell to the Eastern Nazarene College Eagles, 76-90, earlier in the week. Sophomore Matt Powers (Westwood, MA) led the team with 15 points off the bench while teammate Sean Nally (Manchester, MA) added 11 points on 3-for-3 shooting from the three-point line.

Record: 0-2 for the week; 1-3 on the season
