Sony Unveils New Console
On February 20th, Sony unveiled their next big product after weeks and weeks of hype on various video game web sites and on social media sites. Thousands of Sony fans and journalists were in the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York waiting to hear what Sony of America was going to say.
Sony of America CEO, Andrew House told the audience that they have developed, and finished, the PlayStation 4. It is to be released this year during the holiday season. The audience went haywire.
Sony plans to accomplish a lot more with the PlayStaion 4, especially when it comes to distribution and creative outlets.
One of the newest, and biggest features on the console is the “Share” button located on the top of the controller. This allows the players to take footage from a game and share it on a social media web site like Twitter or Facebook. It can even allow game streaming on sites such as Ustream. This allows the community that Sony already has on the PlayStation 3 to become even closer.
Another big and important feature is the fact that the console does not block used games. This allows gamers to buy used games gives them the ability to play them on the console. The used game market helps save customers a lot of money. This is especially true when considering the prices of brand new games.
The other side to that feature is that the PlayStation 4 will not be compatible with other PlayStation games. This includes games from PlayStaion 1, 2 and 3. In response to that, Sony plans on creating a ‘cloud gaming’ platform that involves a user to download all of the past titles in the PlayStation library. Fans of Uncharted, Killzone and inFamous will be pleased to hear this. The ‘cloud gaming’ platform is being developed under the title Gaikai and the head developer is cult favorite game designer David Perry.
Sony has also announced that all of their development studios are working on upcoming titles for the console. It is not confirmed what all of the titles are, but from the press conference there will be a new Killzone and inFamous games along with others created by big name Japanese developers Capcom and Square Enix.
The PlayStation 4 is not without rumors made by various gaming websites and gamers themselves. There are now rumors of the console possibly being digital, with all the game being available through a digital download service. It is in no way confirmed, but with digital gaming becoming a large market, it could be true.
The PlayStation 4 will be available to everyone, and will join Nintendo’s Wii U as part of the newest generation of video game consoles.
