Suffolk Hockey Loses to Curry, 4-1
The Suffolk men’s hockey team lost 4-1 to Curry College in a conference matchup Thursday night at Steriti Rink in the North End. The Rams now have an overall record of 6-10-4, (3-4-2 in the Eastern College Athletic Conference.)
A three-goal first period for the Curry Colonels (3-4-2 ECAC) proved to be the difference in the tilt. After a battle early in the corner, Ian DeLong fed Connor Hendry on the doorstep giving the Colonels a 1-0 lead at 4:45. Colonels wing Frankie Posillico had two goals in the period to extend Curry’s lead to 3-0 by the end of the period.
The first goal for Posillico came at 9:47 into the first. Colonels center, Nicholas Coppola slipped past the Rams defense at the blue line, and on a quick shot, Posillico scored to give Curry a 2-0 advantage.
On his second goal, Posillico scored on a cross-crease that went left-to-right on Suffolk’s Jeff Allsopp for a 3-0 lead at 17:03.
Though the Rams were heavily outshot 18-2 in the first period, the Rams played much better in the remaining 40 minutes. Suffolk freshman Carmen Mastrangelo scored on Colonels goalie Derek Mohney less than five minutes into the second to cut the deficit to 3-1. Brett Kaneshiro answered back for Curry, with a rebound goal with 1:02 left in the second, extending their lead to 4-1.
Brett Roman started in net for the Rams in the third period, turning aside all eight shots he faced. Despite offensive pressure by the Rams in the final frame, Mohney held firm for the Colonels, and the Colonels won by a final score of 4-1.
The Rams are back in action on Saturday, February 2nd at Steriti Rink in the North End at 4:25. They’ll play Salve Regina University in a conference matchup.
